Your first personal training session should not feel like a test. Most people who book one with me are nervous about the same few things. Will I be the most out of shape person there? Will I get crushed and be sore for a week? Will someone try to lock me into a contract? Short answer: no, no, and no. Here’s what actually happens, how to prepare, and how to tell if a trainer is worth your time.

What Happens in Your First Personal Training Session
At Fitness Covered, the first visit starts with a conversation, not a workout. You sit down with a coach and talk about your goals, your schedule, and what has or hasn’t worked before. Then you meet the trainers, tour the gym, and see how our programs work.
That conversation is the most important part of a first personal training session. I want to know what your week looks like. A producer working 12 hour days across the street at Netflix needs a different plan than a parent with a flexible schedule in Los Feliz. I also ask about old injuries, surgeries, medications, and anything your doctor has told you. If something needs medical clearance first, we get it before we push anything.
After that, we move. Nothing crazy. A few basic patterns like squatting, hinging, pushing, pulling, and carrying. This part of a first personal training session shows me what your body can do today.
What I’m Looking For on Day One
People think the first personal training session is about measuring how fit you are. It isn’t. I’m watching how you move, not how much you can lift.
Can you squat to a chair without your knees caving in? Does your lower back round when you pick something up? Does one shoulder move differently than the other? These small things tell me where to start and what to avoid. The American Council on Exercise recommends keeping early assessments simple and relevant to the client’s goals, and I agree. You don’t need a two hour testing day. You need a coach who pays attention.
I’m also listening. If you tell me you’ve started and stopped five times, I’m going to build a plan you can stick to, not the most impressive plan on paper.
How to Prepare for Your First Personal Training Session
Preparing for a first personal training session is simple. Wear clothes you can move in and shoes with a flat, stable sole. Bring water. Eat something light one to two hours before, like a piece of fruit or a small snack with some protein. Training on an empty stomach after a long workday is how people end up lightheaded.
Write down three things before you come in. Your main goal. Your realistic weekly availability. Any injuries or health issues. That’s it. You don’t need to “get in shape first.” That’s what we’re for.
One more thing. Be honest. If you haven’t exercised in three years, say so. I’ve trained people who just had heart attacks and people who were told they were pre-diabetic. Nothing you tell me is going to surprise me, and the more I know, the safer and faster this goes.
How It Should Feel and What Comes Next
You should walk out of a first personal training session feeling like you could have done a little more. That’s on purpose. A first workout that leaves you wrecked tells me the trainer cared more about looking tough than about getting you to come back.
Some soreness a day or two later is normal, especially in your legs. It usually fades within 72 hours. Sharp pain, dizziness, or chest discomfort is not normal, and a good trainer stops the moment you mention any of it.
Here’s a quick test for whether you found the right coach. Did they ask more questions than they answered? Did they explain why each exercise was in the plan? Did they adjust anything when something felt off? If yes, you’re in good hands. If they spent the hour counting reps and checking their phone, keep looking.
Here’s what usually comes next. Most of my clients start at two or three sessions a week. By week four, the movements feel familiar. By week eight, the weights are usually going up. By week twelve, the changes show up in the mirror and in how their clothes fit.
Common Questions Before You Start
Do I need to be in shape before I start?
No. Most of our clients booked their first personal training session after years of not training. We start where you are and build from there.
Is it really one-on-one?
Yes. Your sessions are private, with your coach focused on you the whole time. You never share your trainer with a group.
What if I have an old injury?
Tell us before your first personal training session. We’ll work around it, and if you need clearance from a doctor or physical therapist first, we’ll wait for it.
Do I get to use the gym outside of sessions?
Yes. At Fitness Covered, your gym membership is included, so you can come in on your own days too. We also have a sauna and Normatec recovery.
